A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the Motion Media Design Department in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Motion Media Design at Savannah College of Art and Design. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– The thought process for this concept has led me here, or at least I've always had this in my mind, but I didn't understand what exactly I was doing enough to put this into words. In the media capture production of the visual thesis, every subject I did a shoot with was in a place that felt the most comfortable or considered home; hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, etc. There was only one time we left home for another venue early in production; however, the location was another place of comfort. My primary focus is to use glitch within the lens of Afrofuturism, representing a possible future for people within the African Diaspora who are allowed to be themselves despite negatively distorted views and criticisms about it. From there, my instinct was to create an environment for the subject to feel the most comfortable, and their own home seemed to be the most logical place or another place that felt like home to them. Being in that safe environment allowed them to explore a quality about themselves that was longing for expression, consciously or subconsciously. Once I finished this part of the production, an overall observation occurred, carving out a space for the "Othered." "Space For The Other [To Glitch]" comes from this realization. A space that is entirely one's own to make as one pleases. And yet still be seen as something unnecessary. This type of negative observation manifests through to lenses of glitch art. However, despite this negative critical viewpoint from the outside, the subject can still use that to their advantage, turning negatives into positives. Something that can be inherently ugly made beautiful with their influence, involves transmuting negative criticism to amplify one's natural expression. It is a meditation on connection through the aura of the glitch and how such connections can contain meaningfully deep relationships that are radically shaped and challenged by timing and circumstance. This video collage film is an attempt to unearth and reconnect deeply forged connections, once thought previously to be broken, through a collection of video phone footage representing a shared interest in flow arts and rhythm games; which is manifested through a love for electronic music, rave culture, and the boundless, endlessly creative expression and potential for connection it fosters both off and online. It is a lamentous celebration of joy, freedom, love, grief, heartbreak, and the enduring legacy of the digital providing a means of reconnection and remembrance to the physical, in life and death. This Is Glitchcraft frames their work through the lens of glitch art, where we explore the line between the physical and the digital and how those lines become thin or seemingly nonexistent.
